The Called to Serve as Christ campaign is an extraordinary opportunity for all to play a role in strengthening the Catholic Church in Western Washington.
This campaign will focus on raising $100 million to strengthen our priest pension and retirement medical plans, provide support to women religious serving or who have served in the Archdiocese of Seattle, and assist key efforts in our parishes. Parishioners are asked to consider making a gift above and beyond their existing support for their parish and the Annual Catholic Appeal.
Who will the funds raised support?
Priest Pension Plans:The Archdiocese of Seattle has a canonical responsibility to provide senior priests with pension benefits. The present pay-as-you-go model for the priest pension plan was sustainable when there was a large number of active priests paying into the plan, and a relatively small number receiving benefits. Now, with relatively fewer priests in active ministry, compared to retired, the burdensome “pay as you go” model is no longer sustainable. Through a successful Called to Serve as Christ campaign, $40 million will be designated to priest pension.
Senior Priest Medical Plans: The Archdiocese of Seattle has a canonical responsibility to provide senior priests with medical benefits. The present pay-as-you-go model for medical plans was sustainable when there was a large number of active priests paying into the plan, and a relatively small number receiving benefits. Through a successful Called to Serve as Christ campaign, $15 million will be designated to priest medical.
Support for our Women Religious:
Project details: The campaign will raise funds for women religious, who have played a crucial role in the history of our Church’s mission in Western Washington. From schools to hospitals, from ministry to the poor to ministry in parishes, from retreat centers to social justice and advocacy, the positive impact and reach of their work cannot be overstated. Because they have answered the call to serve as Christ, and because for decades they served with almost no compensation, the campaign will recognize, acknowledge and thank them for their sacrifice and service. Through a successful campaign, $24 million will be designated to women religious to aid the sisters’ pension and healthcare needs.
Parish Fundraising Goals
Across the Archdiocese, parish goals will beset by the Pastoral Leaders Committee based on 1.25 times the average annual offertory over three previous years at a parish. This is a goal, not a mandate. Parishes will not be billed for the difference if they do not achieve their goal provided they put forth a good faith effort to execute the archdiocesan campaign plan.
The more funds a parish raises, the more funds it will keep. An amount equal to 15 percent (then 85 percent after reaching goal) of all money raised by a parish is returned to the parish. Those funds will be used to meet the “called to serve as Christ” theme in each parish.
Our campaign kicks off soon, stay tuned for more information!
